Maybe not well run projects, but we are always somehow a part of a project. In stating this I really wonder how many of us would be more successful if we were aware of this fact and really approached our goals with a "process" and objectives. First let's think about the "project" -- every project contains three parts Cost, Time, Scope-- so if I know that when I begin my "new project" these three element are going to be incorporated. But what holds them together-- better yet, WHAT ARE THEY??

Okay, to make sure we are all on the same page, let's back up and look at this word that seems to get thrown around, but is NEVER really defined --- MANAGEMENT! What does this really mean? It sounds important and people have perceptions of what MANAGEMENT is, but perceptions are biased and we need an unbiased understanding. Webster defines it like this 1) the act or art of managing; 2) the skill of managing; 3) the people who manage. Webster also has the words Control and Direction associated with this word.

So really "Management" is an art/skill as an act carried out by people. It somehow refers to being in "control" and providing "direction". Notice that in the definition it is "action" not thought! This would indicate that good management MUST be "active"! HMMMMM

Now lets look at what a "Project" is--- Webster defines it as 1) a specific plan or design 2) scheme 3) a planned undertaking (task or problem). So a project is a specific plan/scheme that is planned to resolve a task or problem.
OK -- so here is what I would say PM is --

Project Management is " A specific design of task(s) that are planned and carried out by the skills of people to resolve a problem."

Tell me what you think-- give me your ideas -- we are just starting so lets get the ideas on the table!

Beginnings for the Online Business

Online Businesses are not the dotcom business mania... nor the famous "Roll-back pricing"

So what is an online business and why do we care? First, and foremost, YOU have to have customers/clients for your online businesses otherwise known as --
the target population is the focus group of customers/clients that your business is "targeted" toward, hence target population!

So here is what we start looking at:

Who is using the Internet in America?
71.4% of the population in Amercia has access/uses the Internet - Compare this to 14% in China! [As of March 2008 (% of population penetration)]

OKAY... what about the business growth? Well, in North America usage growth of the Internet increased 119%! (2000-2007)

So in looking at these two components of a business, would I be safe in starting an online business if I lived in America? Why or Why not?

(Findings located at http://www.internetworldstats.com/)

Interesting Topics

I am posting various topics to get us to thinking and get input. Well let's define the two terms and see if we can make sense of this:

Here a just a few of the multitude of defintions for revenue
Revenue - 1)equals total sales from operations, 2)Total sales from goods and services, before expenses and taxes; 3) Monies received from all sources (with the exception of fund balances) that will be used to fund expenditures in a fiscal year; 4) Products and services sold to customers by a company.

Model: a hypothetical description of a complex entity or process; exemplar: something to be imitated

Okay, now how do we place this term into a reliable description as a part of a e-business plan? Give me some input...

"description of a complex entity that can be imitated to produce a exemplar of the overall business sales before expenses and taxes"

What about this article describing the 5 best revenue models...

http://www.findfreearticle.com/aid1408/The-5-Best-Revenue-Models-in-E-Commerce-History.html

The online world in Project Management

Hello everyone!
I want to encourage everyone to exchange ideas and information here. I will start off with some basic questions and comments ...

Business Professioanls - I would really like to hear from some businesses who hire "web professionals". What are your requirements? Do you really need to have a person know 5 programming languages... I ask because I read through so many job postings that seem to have "unrealistic" demands for individuals in the web profession.

Educators - Are there any colleges offering BA or BS degrees in the web profession? Not a CS or CIT degree--- a web professional degree? How are educators teaching "Marketing" in colleges and not teaching E-marketing or how are educators teaching business and not teaching E-Business? For the future generations to be viable, students must understand how to manage and market a business online.

I will let someone else chime in...
