the Web is NOT the Internet!
The Internet is a network of networks...
It's main purpose... to transmit/transfer information across networks.
The Web is a graphical interface that runs on the Internet.
It's main purpose ... Allows "users" to exchange information and resources in a "user friendly" enviroment.
The "user friendly environment" is a "marketing tool".
So, is the Web really a "marketing tool"? ...
Well, aren't all marketing operations based on the gathering and exchange of information to effectively market a "service or product"?
------- Someone is giving the information .... someone is receiving the information ---------
And again, isn't the Web all about the exchange of information? So the Internet is the "underlying" transport of the information providing the "networks" for the exchange.
ummmmmmmmmm, is it really that simple?

No. The web is not a marketing tool the internet is a marketing tool. I agree the web is a graphical user interface that people use on the internet to market their idea's. That the internet is just a network just like any other network just on a larger scale world wide, and without a good graphical interface to get your idea across it just the same old scriptsit monochrome screen from the 1980's. Web interface just makes the the product look better becuase clients can see your idea in pictures and in text. On a smaller network it would be useless, but on the larger scale a good graphical interface makes the internet your marketing gate for others to see how good the product your trying to sale. Without the larger network your audience would be smaller thus no real marketing, but the large network is the real marketing gateway. I think I just contradicted myself. Good question. Kudos Prof very trickey!!
Sounds great.
Sure, the web can be a great marketing tool, but you can't have one without the other (the other being the internet). Without the visual platform of the web, I don't feel the internet would be the "global communication phenomenon" it is today.
The web as a marketing tool, hmmmm? Recently I made use of it for my job, the response was great. I wasnt sure how helpful it would be but to my suprise it really generaed buisness.
I think I want to open a new can of worms and say that the 1st: the internet is just a road to get to the stores, the web or web sites are just the stores themselves. So doesn't that make the search engines that we use to find the stores or web sites and the information that they offer about each web site the actual marketing tool?
Cheri-
I agree with Cheri. Unless we already have the Web address then we have to use a search engine to find what we are looking for.
okay lets back up... first came the Internet and the purpose of the Internet was... to transmit information between a set of networks; main system -- Email
so it was set up ONLY to transmit information, not promote or commercialize information.
Here's the big questions... if tomorrow the Web was shut down... would there still be the Internet?
--- AND
and was the Internet being used before the Web (1991)?
Yes, the Internet was used hefore 1991.
Yes, I think if the Web was shut down toy, there would still be the Internet since the Internet came first.
Even if the web went down, we would still use internet to communicate. This means Ecommerce would still exist without the web. Although we market on the web, the use of the internet is used mainly, so the internet is the marketing tool... not the web
So, basically, the internet may strive without the web, but the web may not exist without the internet. The web is the corvette on wheels(the internet).
i love your analogy
Wow this is so interesting, I never knew the two were different. I never thought about it before actually. But, yes I agree that the internet would continue such as basic email.
Yes, I think the web is a marketing tool. It contains multimedia which allows the users to read text, look at pictures, watch animation and users can build websites for businesses which draws people to look at the web. The internet was used in the space program in the late 50's and started developing in the 60's. The web and internet combined together allows users to gather and transit information all over the world. The internet and web are both marketing tools.

I agree with anonymous. Both are marketing tools. The web just makes it more interesting.
I think that the internet started out simply as a means of communication. However, with the introduction of the WWW and it's rapidly spreading popularity and availability, it has evolved into an immense networking, marketing, education and research tool. Now marketing can be achieved on a Global level unlike ever possible before. I believe that the primary usage of the web is now marketing- just look at how many advertisements you are bombarded with on any given web page. Also, I believe that the web has allowed companies to expand into farther reaches of the planet, because they have access to target audiences that they didn't previously have access to.
